The 17th annual MAKING A SCENE Conference took place Thursday, May 5, 2016 at the beautiful VanDusen Botanical Gardens.
The morning session brought forward several years of community consultation through the Theatre Engagement Project, and conference attendees identified their priorities for the future of our industry. There will be more on this work at a later date.
The afternoon session focused on Inclusion, and there were many important and heart-felt discussions about what inclusion looks like and could look like in our theatre community. In wrapping up the conference, co-facilitators Marcus Youssef (Artistic Director of Neworld Theatre) and Sarah Garton Stanley (Associate Artistic Director, English Theatre at the National Arts Centre) asked the attendees to consider one micro-action they are prepared to commit to taking in 2016 to further the work towards inclusion. To keep the attendees committed to the work, the micro-actions they personally submitted are listed HERE, and in December 2016 the GVPTA will check in with each of them to see the progress being made.
We look forward to the work that came out of the conference that will happen over the next year!
We thank everyone who contributed to the success of this year’s conference: those who attended and participated, those who helped plan, facilitate and/or lead sessions throughout the day, VanDusen Garden, and our sponsor, Front Row Insurance. Everyone involved helped the day live up to our Great Expectations.
